Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century
Teaching Philosophy
Christa McAuliffe was an American teacher and, one of the seven crew member killed in the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. The quote "I touch the future. I teach" was on a tee-shirt she had in her baggage.
My tee-shirt would have, one word "Why?"
This reflects my hope that all people, young and old will question the world, rather then simply accepting what is around them.

Some Thoughts on 21st Century Learning
This reflection of 21st Century learning was posted by David Ligon on a teaching community website, designed to be a place where teachers can meet each other and share ideas. This quote is particularly referring to the use of information technology in learning.
"21st Century learning is the process whereby digital natives utilize the power of modern technology to learn anything, anytime, anywhere. Classrooms are no longer defined by rigid walls, as hybrid learning models blend the virtual with the physical into a truly engaged and collaborative educational experience". http://www.classroom20.com/profiles/blogs/21st-century-teaching-amp |
The following quote was taken from the website of a company that offers professional development for teachers.
"It is bold. It breaks the mold. It is flexible, creative, challenging, and complex. It addresses a rapidly changing world filled with fantastic new problems as well as exciting new possibilities." The Hundred Languages of Children
The child is made of one hundred.
The child has a hundred languages a hundred hands a hundred thoughts a hundred ways of thinking of playing, of speaking. A hundred. Always a hundred ways of listening of marveling, of loving a hundred joys for singing and understanding a hundred worlds to discover a hundred worlds to invent a hundred worlds to dream. |
The child has
a hundred languages (and a hundred hundred hundred more) but they steal ninety-nine. The school and the culture separate the head from the body. They tell the child: to think without hands to do without head to listen and not to speak to understand without joy to love and to marvel only at Easter and at Christmas. They tell the child: to discover the world already there and of the hundred they steal ninety-nine. |
They tell the child:
that work and play reality and fantasy science and imagination sky and earth reason and dream are things that do not belong together. And thus they tell the child that the hundred is not there. The child says: No way. The hundred is there. -Loris Malaguzzi Founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach |
An Amazing 21st Century School - Saint Macartans Primary School, Mornington.
I was so impressed by the gardening and environmental program in place at this school in Victoria. Through the mediums of gardening and recycling everything from water to waste, 21st Century learning is truly embraced. Students take control of and direct their learning, they collaborate with each other, learn real world, practical skills and knowledge and a huge amount of respect for the environment and others. I can say nothing for the principles employed in subjects such as maths and English, but the gardening and recycling program at this school is an wonderful and successful step towards reforming education for the better. Saint Macartins Primary School featured on the ABC program Gardening Australia in April 2013. Below is a link to fact sheet on the segment in which the school featured.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
IntrinsicGardening
Drawing Cooking Swimming |
ExtrinsicAchieving good academic grades
Professional Success Swimming |
What defines my extrinsic motivation is a desire to be seen and perceived a certain way by the people around me. This does make them intrinsic to some extent as well because I am also motivated to be seen and perceived in a way that aligns by my core values. There is also a degree of satisfaction I get from achieving success. While I am extrinsically motivated to achieve good grades and a healthy physique, I am intrinsically motivated to feel the satisfaction of succeeding.
My intrinsically motivated activities are all things I do because I enjoy the process - however there is also an element of extrinsic motivation. For example I am motivated to cook because I enjoy cooking but I am also motivate by the taste rewards of a good meal or product.
Gardening may be the only example of an activity I do that is purely intrinsically motivated.
